 Madrid Fusion Manila’s third year yields higher congress turnout

     The Department of Tourism (DOT) disclosed that over a thousand delegates have signed up for the third serving of the epicurean event Madrid Fusion Manila (MFM) from 6 to 8 April at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.


     A total of 1,400 people from here and abroad including China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Macau, Taiwan, Denmark, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA will have their plates full with the usual MFM offerings like the International Gastronomy Congresswhere they will engage with 19 celebrated Filipino chefs and Michelin star culinary masters from Asia, Europe, and the Americas on a masterclass tackling culinary trends, technological innovation and revolutionary techniques in gastronomy practices.


     Tourism Seretary Wanda Corazon Tulfo-Teo said the Philippines has kept up with the recognition it has been getting as a culinary destination, calling MFM a milestone in continuing the juicy discussion on the Philippines as the next gastronomical hotspot in Asia.


     “The Congress aims to expand the conversation on how gastronomy can be transformative, sustaining not only people, but their culture, and the fruits of the land and the waters too. This is certainly a platform for innovation, a relevant take off point for discussion fur future of food in the 21stcentury,” she said in a statement read by DOT Undersecretary Benito Bengzon, Jr. at the MFM media briefing held Wednesday at the SMX Convention Center.


     MFM is the only Asian edition of Madrid Fusion, and is touted as the single most important international gastronomy congress in the 21st century. It is a joint partnership between the DOT, the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) PHL, and Madrid Fusion Organizers Foro de Debate and Arum.


     On its third edition, MFM takes on a more compelling direction as it steers talks “Towards a Sustainable Gastronomy Planet.” Its core objective is to start the conversation and engage the public on green, sustainable gastronomy practice that values its natural sources and local heritage.


     DOT Director Verna Buesuceso, MFM overall project director, relayed, delegates and connoisseurs alike can once again savor and taste premium local and Spanish products, ingredients, and fresh produce across 200 booths occupying over 600sqm of the SMX Halls1-3 for three days at the Fusion Manila International Gastronomy Expo.


     As an added feature this year, tour and travel operators from around the world have also been invited to discuss with their Filipino counterparts opportunities for tourism development during the Culinary Tourism Travel Exchange at the sidelines of the three-day congress.


     The Spanish side has only good words to say about this continued partnership and increased congress turnout. Jose Carlos Capel of Foro de Debate acknowledged the growing interest Philippine cuisines is getting over the last few years, relating “it is no coincidence that the Philippines and its development in cuisines is something people should keep an eye on.”


     Inigo Cañedo of Arum, who already feels more Filipino now, reiterates MFM’s bigger objective in the last three years has been “to highlight Philippines as a center of gastronomy in Asia.”

Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo-Teo joins Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Luis Antonio Calvo Castano, Madrid Fusion President Jose Carlos Capel, Director Inigo Canedo and Mielle Esteban Powell Arum Estrategias Internacionalizacion with some of the world-renowned chefs and private sector supporters during the gala reception of the Madrid Fusion Manila (MFM) 2017 held Wednesday evening at the SMX Convention Center. Secretary Teo thanked other MFM partners like farmers and agriculturists, trade and tourism stakeholders, media, diplomats, artists, government leaders, educators and foodies for MFM’s successful three-year run in sowing together the seeds that broke new grounds and established the Philippines as a center of gastronomy in Asia.



  Filipino fashion icon Renee Salud presents his Philippine Tapestry Collection inspired by the diversity of native fabric, ingenious art designs, food and culture of the country’s regions from the Cordilleras, Bicol, Visayas, Mindanao and Manila. The Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company complements the fashion collection with distinct dances of these regions.
